Conference on Sanitation Options in the Asia Pacific


The Conference on Sanitation Options in the Asia Pacific was jointly organized for the first time in Vietnam by the International Water Association (IWA) and Southeast Asian Water Utilities Network (SEAWUN) from 18-20 November. The Conference was endorsed by the Ministry of Construction, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, sponsored by Vitens – Evides and Vewin and supported by ADB, eawag, JICA, USAID.

This event was designed specifically to cater to the developing countries within the East Asia & Pacific region, and aims to equip participants with knowledge on sustainable sanitation options through presentations of best practices and experiences. The attendance of the workshop was 135 people from high ranking government officials of Vietnam, professors and respected experts from renowned universities of Vietnam and the world, management and representatives from water and wastewater companies, management and representatives from national, regional and international water associations, representatives from supporting agencies in water and sanitation…

The Conference was organized at the most opportune time in the context that the UN General Assembly declared the year 2008 the International Year of Sanitation. 2.6 billion people lack sanitation worldwide and almost one in two people in the developing countries lack access to sanitation. This lack of sanitation is posing negative impacts on health and livings of all people, especially children and women, the poor and the disadvantaged. This fact requires a lot of efforts from all stakeholders and innovative and appropriate solutions to accelerate health, social and economic growth.

During 3 days of the conference, 40 presentations of one Seminar and 9 following sessions not only provided a comprehensive sanitation picture but also the variety of options in Asia Pacific:
